Bob Arceneaux is the CEO and green coffee buyer for Orleans Coffee Exchange. The company has been the sole specialty coffee roaster in the greater New Orleans area since 2005. Bob began his career in coffee 22 years ago in the production department for PJ’s Coffee here in New Orleans, and most of his 6 years there was as the production manager and roast master. Bob left there to participate in a start-up called Covington Coffee Works on the north shore of New Orleans. He later went to work for Orleans Coffee Exchange where he was the roast master and assistant green buyer. Bob and his long-time co-worker Tom Oliver purchased Orleans Coffee Exchange in 2007. Bob was a member of the Roaster's Guild Executive Council from 2006-2008. He occasionally travels to Central & South America to visit coffee farms and meet coffee producers.

Carlos Henrique Jorge Brando is an engineer with graduate work in planning and business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was a manager and a director of leading Brazilian coffee machinery maker Pinhalense for over ten years. He is now a director and a partner of coffee consulting, marketing and trading company, P&A International Marketing, which exports Pinhalense coffee machinery and consults for the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the World Bank and companies and institutions in Brazil and other countries on matters as diverse as technology, quality, marketing and promotion of consumption. Carlos is a member of the boards of UTZ Certified, Coffee Quality Institute, Ipanema Coffees and the Santos Coffee Museum.

Ultimate Barista Champion, David Buehrer, a native Houstonian, has been behind a coffee bar since he was 16. Now operating Greenway Coffee & Tea in Houston, TX, David is actively trying to improve the coffee culture of his native city. When not behind the coffee bar, he is the resident barista of Anvil Bar & Refuge, voted top 20 bars in the nation. David has competed and won in the UBC for over 18 months and has traveled to New York, Dallas, and Orlando to compete. His titles included Latte Art Champion, Espresso Cocktail Champion, Espresso Frappe Champion and Overall points Ultimate Barista. Besides working with the Ultimate Barista Challenge, David has also contributed to food websites SeriousEats.com and Houstonpress.com and is an active member of the Barista Guild of America.

Scott Clemons joined BBH&Co. in 1990, and has held a variety of investment roles at the firm over the past 20 years. His career began in international equities, where he was an analyst and portfolio manager of European and Asian equities, working out of the firm’s New York and London offices throughout the 1990s. In 2001 he broadened his responsibilities into domestic equity management and research as well, and then from 2005 through 2010 managed the New York office of the firm’s Private Wealth Management business. In 2010 he was appointed Chief Investment Strategist, and is today one of the firm’s primary writers and speakers on topics related to the economy, financial markets and investing. Jaime Duque began his career as an agricultural engineer and later served in different capacities for the Quindío Coffee Growers Committee as part as Colombian Coffee Federation. Throughout the years, he has worked directly with coffee producers using his knowledge in an effort to achieve social, technical and environmental sustainability. He initiated and coordinated The Specialty Coffee Program in the Quindío Region, and he implemented various certification programs for coffee growers, such as UTZ Certified. In 2005, he created a Coffee Lab Facilities for producers at the Agrado coffee farm. His objectives were to assure quality at the farm level and to offer education on cupping and quality, thereby adding the component of quality to the certifications given. Recently, he established his own company, E&D Cafés (Education and Development of Coffees) in Bogotá, Colombia, a location which allows him to have an integral view of the entire chain of coffee.

Edward Fischer is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University. Professor Fischer has written or edited seven books, including Cultural Logics and Global Economies and Broccoli and Desire: Global Connections and Maya Struggles in Postwar Guatemala. Much of his research focuses on the modern Maya peoples of highland Guatemala. He has also conducted fieldwork in Germany. His current work looks at the ways moral values affect economic rationalities. Fischer has an acclaimed video series "Peoples and Cultures of the World" and he has been featured on BigThink.com and in articles in the New York Times, Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today, and other popular media. At Nestle, he was a key account manager in charge of soluble and R&G business models. In 2000, he joined the NESCAFE Marketing Team in France. Phyllis Johnson serves as President & Co-Founder of BD Imports, a specialty grade coffee importer. Started in 1999, BD imports has been involved in projects to help promote sustainability and is known to give a start to African women and small businesses engaged in the production and trade of coffee. She is involved in various trade organizations and has served as a board member for the SCAA and Ecafe Foundation. Dr. Craig Llewellyn

Dr. Craig Llewellyn is currently a Research Principal in the Global Toxicology Group at Kraft Foods. His global responsibilities include the science and management policies of food allergens, addressing toxicological food safety issues, and food ingredient safety assessments. He began his food industry career at Kraft Foods in 2000 as a Research Scientist in the Scientific Affairs Group. In 2006, Dr. Llewellyn joined the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company as a Principle Scientist in the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Group, and in 2008 he returned to Kraft Foods. Prior to completing his Ph.D., he was an Analytical Food Chemist in the Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Dr. Llewellyn received his B.S. degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University, his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Eli Lilly and Company.

Peter R. Martin, M.D, is a Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University, School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Division of Addiction Medicine, the Addiction Psychiatry Training Program, the Vanderbilt Addiction Center, and the Institute for Coffee Studies. He has an accomplished history in medicine, specializing in molecular basis, diagnosis, and treatment of drug use disorders with an emphasis on substance-induced mental disorders. Dr. Martin is the author of Healing Addiction: An Integrated Pharmacopsychosocial Approach to Treatment (John Wiley and Sons, 2006). Dr. Martin is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada), Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry with Certification in the Subspecialty of Addiction Psychiatry.

Sandy McAlpine has been the President of the Coffee Association of Canada since 1998. Prior to taking on the role of President of the Coffee Association Sandy worked for eighteen year with a Canadian specialty coffee chain, Timothy's World Coffees. While active in the trade Mr. McAlpine had served as a Director then Treasurer and finally as Chairman of the Coffee Association of Canada and was one of the founders and first two term President of the Canadian Association of Specialty Foods.

Through his extensive experience in packaged foods, consumer focused product development, QA and Regulatory Affairs, Norm has formulated a broad perspective on coffee, product safety, consumers and regulations worldwide. Norm holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and Masters of Business Administration from Iona College (NY).

Heather has fifteen years of experience in the coffee industry. She began her coffee career at the age of eleven by washing dishes and sweeping floors in her parent’s coffeehouse. By the age of fifteen, Heather was working behind the espresso machine and experimenting with different drinks. Since her first shot of espresso, Heather has continued to improve and hone her skills behind the bar. Heather holds many Barista titles including 2003 and 2007 U.S. Barista Champion, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 Western Barista Champion, 2007-2010 Ultimate Barista Champion and finished 2nd in the World at World Championships in Tokyo. Heather graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in International Business and Marketing.

Diego Pizano

A native of Bogotá, Colombia, Diego Pizano has long been involved in both economics and the coffee trade. An economic advisor to the President of Colombia from 1982 to 1986, he has also acted as economic advisor to the Colombian Board of Trade and as a consultant to the World Bank, the Interamerican Development Bank and the Andean Community.He was deputy chief of Mission of the Colombian Embassy to the White House. For many years he was in charge of economic research and international affairs at the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia and from 1981-2007 was a member of the Colombian delegation to the International Coffee Organization.Mr. Pizano is also one of the founders of the Institute of Coffee Studies of Vanderbilt University in Nashville (USA). He is the author of several books and articles and is currently the President of the 4C Association and the Chairman of the Board of the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. His last book, ‘Conversations with Great Economists’ was published in New York in 2009.

Mr. Sampaio comes from a family of traditional coffee growers in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He started his career at the University of São Paulo as an Agronomist, later becoming a consultant for COOXUPÉ, the largest coffee cooperative in Brazil. Currently, along with managing his own coffee farm, Mr. Sampaio heads his private consulting company, specializing in coffee production, processing, and management of coffee estates. His international experience has been dedicated to the support services of Roasters, Traders and Growers around the coffee world with experiences in China, Africa and Central America. Roel Vaessen has served as Secretary General of the European Coffee Federation since June 1992. Having studied International Law at Leiden University, Roel joined the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands and was initially involved in export promotion and subsequently in intergovernmental commodity agreements. He was also appointed the Dutch delegate to the International Coffee Organization. Roel has served as Chairman of the ICO Private Sector Consultative Board and has been Secretary of the Association of Netherlands Coffee Roasters since 1988.

Sabrina Vigilante is Director of Sustainable Value Chains at the Rainforest Alliance - a non-profit environmental organization working in
70 countries around the globe. Over the past decade, Sabrina has pioneered development of international markets for coffee, tea, produce and dozens of other Rainforest Alliance Certified products. She has opened markets for certified sustainable farm products in North America, Europe, Japan, Australia and Brazil, and has influenced major food and beverage businesses to integrate sustainable procurement practices into their business strategies. Sabrina has served as the Rainforest Alliance spokesperson in international conferences around the world. Fluent in Spanish, she earned an MBA in international business from Bryant College and a BA in English with a concentration in Anthropology from Tulane University.

Ricardo Villanueva-Carrera


Mr. Ricardo Villanueva Carrera, a coffee grower from San Marcos region, was elected on November 2010 for a second term as Chairman of the Guatemalan National Coffee Association –Anacafé. He was member of the Board of Directors of Anacafé from 1994 to 1996 and was reelected on 2004. As Chairman, he is focused in the implementation of the Coffee Sector Competitiveness Plan, basing his priorities on sustainability and coffee quality. Mr.Villanueva will support technical assistance for coffee growers and continue with the efforts of promoting Guatemalan Coffees in international markets of Europe, North America and Asia.
