NCA Seeks Director, External Relations and Communications


The National Coffee Association (NCA), founded in 1911 and based in New York, NY, is seeking a Director, External Relations and Communications. The position is responsible for the NCA’s external relations program, with a strong focus on communications and public relations.

The Director, External Relations and Communications reports to the President and CEO and is responsible for developing, implementing and directing NCA’s communication strategy. This includes public relations, issues management, and media relations. He/she plans and executes all publications and other corporate communications for the organization. The position plays a leadership role in NCA’s social media program and assists with government affairs, and event planning and execution. Additionally, the Director serves as staff liaison to the Public Relations Committee, Science Advisory Group, and the Board’s External/Member Relations Committee.

The position also researches and analyzes Association needs for public relations and issues management, and proposes and implements programs for new or expanded services in both areas; assists in preparing the NCA annual operating plan and strategic plan; conducts media relations function, meeting information/comment requests directly and/or by preparing and assisting CEO or coordinating other interview subjects as appropriate; and, manages outside public relations counsel and/or public relations campaign, as needed.

The position holds responsibility for writing, editing and publishing association publications and corporate communications, including monthly newsletter and quarterly statistical reports, content for Websites, and ad hoc member notices. Further, the position provides editorial input, as requested, on all Association written materials, including marketing copy, member notices, external correspondence, and assists in development of marketing materials.

The Director, External Relations and Communications must be a strategic thinker and possess strong problem solving and writing skills. He/she must have great people skills and experience using social media in a business communication setting. The candidate should have at least 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in public relations, media relations and communications. Experience in an association or other nonprofit organization is a plus. Excellent presentation skills are also a must. He/she should possess the ability to manage multiple projects and have well honed planning, time management and organization skills. Exposure to external relations as it applies to government relations is a plus.
