Understanding Extended Producer Responsibility: A Resource for the Coffee Industry

What is Extended Producer Responsibility?

In response to increasing recycling and waste management costs associated with growing volumes of consumer packaging, some states are implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations for packaging.  EPR regulations (1) charge the “polluter” for the packaging waste it introduces into the state, and (2) incentivize manufacturers to change packaging design and materials to improve recyclability and minimize waste.

If your company manufactures coffee that is sold in cups, bags, and other packaging materials, it is likely that you will have reporting and fee obligations in several states.
